What a Portuguese NIF is and who really needs one.
The NIF (Numero de Identificacao Fiscal) is the Portuguese tax identification number. If you rent, bank, buy, or run a business in Portugal, you almost certainly need one. This page explains why.
What is a NIF?
The NIF is a nine-digit number issued by the Portuguese tax authority (Autoridade Tributaria e Aduaneira). It uniquely identifies you as a taxpayer in Portugal. It is required for almost every meaningful financial or legal action in the country, from opening a bank account to signing a rental contract.
Who needs one?
You do not need to be a resident of Portugal to have a NIF. Non-residents are eligible and, in fact, expected to obtain one before starting most administrative processes. Common reasons foreigners obtain a NIF include:
-
Opening a Portuguese bank account
Almost all Portuguese banks require a NIF to open an account, whether you plan to live in Portugal or simply hold funds there.
-
Renting or buying property
Landlords, notaries, and real estate agencies will not sign a rental or purchase contract without a valid NIF for each party.
-
Registering a business
If you plan to start a company, freelance, or invoice clients in Portugal, a NIF is the starting point of the entire registration flow.
-
Buying a car, phone plan, or utilities
Registering a vehicle, signing up for a mobile plan, or opening electricity/water accounts all require a NIF.
-
Applying for residency or a visa
A NIF is a common prerequisite when applying for a residency permit, the Golden Visa, D7, D8, or student visas.
How is it obtained from abroad?
If you are a non-resident of Portugal or of a country outside the European Union, Portuguese law requires you to appoint a tax representative (representante fiscal) based in Portugal. That representative interacts with the tax authority on your behalf during the application. Our service acts as your representative for the application process, so you do not need to visit Portugal in person.
You provide us with a scanned passport and a recent proof of address. We prepare the paperwork, submit it to the tax authority, obtain the NIF certificate, and deliver it to your dashboard as a signed PDF.
How long does it take?
With our Standard service, most NIFs are delivered within 5 to 7 business days from the moment we receive complete documents. Our Express service delivers within 2 to 3 business days. Timing depends primarily on the response time of the tax authority.
A calm, human service.
We are a small team focused on doing this one thing well. You get a dedicated case handler, a clear status timeline in your dashboard, and answers to your messages the same business day.
If we cannot obtain your NIF for any reason on our side, we refund the full service fee. No fine print.
